Die TONON-STORY

1926 - THE FOUNDATION

Alberto Tonon “Cavaliere del Regno” founds the company. The location of the company is located in the northeast of Italy, the Friuli area in the village of Manzano.

1929 - TECHNOLOGY OF BENT WOOD

Alberto Tonon brings as first the technology of bent wood to Italy.

1933 - THE THIRTIES

Tonon delivers deckchairs for the cruise ship rex for Lloyd Trieste.

1935 - BICYCLE WHEELS

The economic crise in Italy, everything is lacking, Tonon specializes in the production of bicycle wheels in wood.

1950 - "LA FABBRICA"

Tonon is growing up to 220 workers. In the aera the people are calling the company Tonon simply “la fabbrica” (the factory).

1960 - THE SONS

Augusto and Bruno Tonon lead the company in the 60ies, supplying the italian furniture industries as subcontractor.

1971 - SANDRO TONON

Sandro Tonon joins the company. Bringing Tonon back to its own brand. Uniforma, is the first collection of design after supplying the furniture industry.

1981 - HIGH GLOSS LACQUER

High gloss furniture are coming in fashion. Tonon gets with the paperclip chair a bestseller in America. Department stores as Bloomingdale and Macy’s sell the chair all over the United States.

1983 - JONATHAN CHAIR

Paolo Nava creates the Jonathan chair. A new interpretation of the typical bent chair of the past.

1985 - THE RESEARCH

In cooperation with the designer Paolo Nava and a company in the aircraft industry Tonon is developing the first carbonfiber chair.

1986 - CONTRACT COLLECTION

Tonon opens a new market in the horeca business (hotel, restaurant, cafeteria). The wide program of the Flowers Collection gives an answer for every destination. Hotel chains like Sheraton, Holiday Inn, Hilton etc. get customers of Tonon.

1998 - THE CHANGE OF OF UPHOLSTERY

Tonon is changing from the traditional upholstery on wooden frame to shells with steel construction and injected foam.

1998 - EPISODES COLLECTION

Episodes collection will get soon one of the most famous collections of Tonon. In 2004 Tonon delivers over 1900 chairs for the main restaurant of the Queen Mary 2.

1999 - NOT ONLY WOOD

Follow me is the first collection of Tonon that includes steel chairs.

2002 - INTERNATIONAL AWARDS

Shells is one of the first winning products of Tonon in a design award.

2003 - NEW MATERIALS

The first chair in skin injected foam is born (integral foam).

2007 - YOU FOR ME

Sandro Tonon developes together with 6 designers a fully upholstered collection all manufactured with injected foam shells.

2009 - HERE COMES THE SUN

The first outdoor collection. Tonon invests in moulds. Sundance, Sunrise and Sunset are produced in polyethylene with a rotational moulding process.

2012 - UP CHAIR

The Up-chair immediately gets the favorite in all international markets, both for the material and for its organic design.

2015 - SIDEBOARD MOVE

Our first sideboard is born with carvet front doors in wood or in Soft Touch.

2016 - RIVER SIDE

The product manufactured in soft touch polyplus for indoor and outdoor seating.

2018 - FL@T

As the name suggests, Fl@t comes from a thin, padded and flexible shape, which is curved to form a body and fixed by a dedicated steel hardware, which also serves as a decorative element. The body is “suspended” on a black painted aluminum arch, fixed to a base in the same material. This slightly flexible shell gives the product an extremely light look and offers optimal seating comfort.
